THE COMPLETE SHERLOCK HOLMES
The Complete Sherlock Holmes
-Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
‘Crime is common. Logic is
rare.’
I don't
need to introduce the protagonist or the author of this book. Sherlock Holmes
and his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, are both recognized as the greatest in
their respective fields; and that needs no justifying.
The Complete Sherlock Holmes is an anthology of stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It comprises four novels and fifty-six short
stories, including some of the
most famous collections of Sherlock Holmes stories, such as The Adventures of
Sherlock Holmes and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, along with longer stories
like The Hound of the Baskervilles.
The stories revolve around the
eccentric, arrogant, and ingenious Sherlock Holmes, the
most popular and influential fictional detective ever created. He and his trusted friend, Dr. John
Watson, from whose perspective the stories are written, step from Holmes’ 221B
Baker Street home into the swirling fog of Victorian London to exercise the
unique combination of detailed observation, vast knowledge, and brilliant
deduction. Inevitably, Holmes rescues the innocent, confounds the guilty, and
solves the most perplexing puzzles known to literature.
The stories take the reader through Holmes'
methods of deduction, and the explanations often leave the reader amazed. Holmes
is a character whom readers will enjoy reading about, his often casual demeanour
contrasted by his intensity when he is hot on the trail of a case. Watson is
also interesting, as a good-natured and supportive friend.
Sherlock Holmes is one of the most well developed
literary characters of all time. Every time, something about him is revealed;
but not too much, so he remains mysterious. He is not just intellectual and
rational; he is also very physically strong and an expert in martial arts. On the
other hand, he is very anti-social and a chain smoker.
Holmes is contrasted to his roommate Dr. John
Watson, who is nice and polite. He is intelligent, but never seems to be able
to deduce how Holmes solves his cases.
There is no dearth of variety presented in the
stories. In some cases, Holmes works with nobles and royalty, while in others,
with bank clerks and vagabonds. The settings range from the English countryside
to the wharves on the Thames to extravagant manors.
Highly
recommended! You are bound to be Sherlocked!
